Ever notice how those ceiling-mounted infrared heaters just… sit there? You flip a manual switch, wait for the warmth to hit you, and then forget to turn it off. It works, but it’s a bit old-school. If you want to bring these into your smart home setup, you can’t just plug them into a cheap smart plug and call it a day. There’s a bit more to it. The wiring side of things Here’s the thing: infrared lamps are power-hungry. They pull a lot of current. If you try to run them through a standard smart light switch, you’re probably going to fry the relay. Not a great look. To do this right, we use heavy-duty contactors. Think of it as a beefy middleman. Your smart app (using Zigbee or Matter) sends a tiny signal to a relay, which then tells the contactor to let the big power flow through to the heater. It’s safer, and it means your gear won’t burn out the moment you hit “on.” That instant warmth The best part about infrared is the speed. You don’t have to wait for a furnace to kick in or air to move through vents. You click a button, and seconds later, you feel that heat on your shoulders. It’s almost instant. We usually pair these with room sensors. Once the temperature dips below a certain point, the heater kicks in automatically. You get that cozy spike of heat exactly where you need it, without having to get off the couch. A few things to watch out for It’s not all plug-and-play. You’ll need a neutral wire in your switch box, or a dedicated power feed for the smart module. If you don’t have that, you’re in for some annoying wiring work. And be careful where you put your sensors. Since this heat is directional—basically a beam of warmth—putting a sensor in a “cold spot” is a recipe for disaster. The system will think the room is freezing and just keep blasting heat, turning the area directly under the lamp into a sauna. If you’re the type of person who needs the temperature to stay exactly 72 degrees without any swinging up or down, skip the simple on/off switches and go for a PID controller. It’s a bit more technical, but it keeps things steady.
